1 Place du Trocadero
From the top of the Chaillot hill, the rather dull place du Trocadero offers stunning views of the Left Bank. Several wide avenues radiating from it give the impression of a busy roundabout where no one cares to stop. Behind a high wall to the west is the Passy cemetery and, facing the river, the Palais de Chaillot, built for the 1937 Exposition Universelle. The name Trocadero commemorates the capture in 1823 of Fort Trocadero in Spain.

2 Jardins du Trocadero
Stairs lead down to the gardens on either side of a long pool adorned with stone and gilt bronze statues and attractive floodlit fountains, which provide one of the most spectacular summer night shows of the capitaL Cross the Pont d'Iena, named to commemorate Napoleon's victory over the Prussians in 1806. The bridge provides a good close-up view of the Eiffel Tower.

3 Champ de Mars
If, after the thrill of climbing up to the third floor of the Eiffel Tower, you feel the need to relax in a down-to-earth restaurant, then La Fontaine de Mars, 129 rue St-Dominique, is just what you are looking for. The vast open space, stretching from the Eiffel Tower to the Ecole Militaire, was originally designed in the 18th century as a parade ground for the nearby military academy, hence its name. Later on, it became the tradition to use it for large-scale public festivals and World Exhibitions; in 1989, almost half a million people attended the mammoth celebrations for the 100th birthday of the Eiffel Tower.
Walk across the park and turn right into avenue de la Motte Picquet.

4 Ecole Militaire
The building of this magnificent neoclassical military academy, designed by Louis XV's architect, Jacques-Ange Gabriel, was actually financed by a special tax on playing cards. Napoleon Bonaparte was undoubtedly its most famous cadet.

5 Musee de L'Ordre de la Liberation The order, created by General de GauUe in 1940, is the highest honour bestowed by France in recognition of outstanding services rendered during World War II. Among the allied leaders honoured are: King George VI, Winston Churchill and General Eisenhower.

Southwest: Village Suisse antique shops. Musee Rodin. This is one of the oldest districts of Paris, rich in traditions going back to the Middle Ages, yet teeming with new ideas launched by its lively young population. Situated on the Left Bank, opposite the Ile-de-la-Cite, the district spreads from the place St-Michel uphill to the Montagne Ste­Genevieve dominated by the Pantheon and the Sorbonne. A free and easy atmosphere pervades the whole area.

The Gallo-Roman city Roman public buildings were concentrated on the Left Bank, just across the river from the Ile-de-la­Cite occupied by the Celts. Ruins of public baths were discovered next to the Hotel de Cluny, and those of an amphitheatre in the vicinity of the Jardin des Plantes. At the end of the 3rd century, hordes of barbarians burned down the whole Left Bank, halting development there for a long time.
